As I panned the room, I first noticed an exhibit of numerous creamy white papers on an eggshell white wall. My first reaction was, as it is with most modern exhibits, what the heck is this about?

As I zoomed in further, I read that it was an installation of 235 photos taken from 1899 – 1996.
A close-up inspection revealed the back side of a photo with the inscription “Thanksgiving 1979″.

All of the sudden I had an image in my head conjured up by those two words. The image was of a dining room found in a typical ’70s style household filled with smokey shades of avacado greens, pale golds and burnt oranges found in Autumn leaves.

A steaming turkey with a buttery brown crusted skin placed on an oval colonial style table all filtered through the translucent sepia glaze of carmelized kodachrome.

I actually got it.

As designers and marketers, we might want to allow this to happen in our work as well. Without the pleasant emotion that one’s imagination can provide, the actual picture on the other side may not be the one the consumer wants to buy. If I had seen someone else’s version of “Thanksgiving 1979,” I might of walk away thinking that the display was ugly rather than amazed. Sometimes the thoughts that we create are more powerful than the images that are created for us which may be the reason some reader state that “the book better than the movie”.

“Making Connections work” was a theme for a conference I attended a while back. The power of this theme is that it worked in different ways for all those who attended. From office staff to CEOs, vendors and venture capitalists, all were able to create a picture in their mind of what to expect from this program.

What are your favorites?

I read many opinions including some that said retweeting was not really even necessary.  If you felt like it great but if you could find the link on the internet yourself then why bother.  So I came up with the premise that I would only retweet a tweet that was sent from people who read blogs and news items that I would not normally read.

Here is my first retweet:

Since “voice drawing”  was something I would have never heard of or thought of before I felt that this post deserved an RT.  By the way, drawing with your voice is a lot of fun to try, though I probably draw with my voice as well as I do with my toes.

So it made sense.  I would retweet those posts that were definitely from a news pool that I had never swam in.  But then, just for fun, I tried retweeting several posts that were very interesting and something very interesting happened.

I started to get more followers.

Then I saw a video, again from @JesseNewhart, called “How to Turn Twitter Followers into Friends” in which Jesse praised his fellow twitterers for retweeting and stated that retweeting makes you feel good. He is right.  Retweeting is the thing to do whenever you can, not something that needs to be used judiciously.  Retweeting is a simple way of saying thank you to the person who posted helpful or fun to use information.  And you never know where it will lead.
